The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks

Ira Levinson is in trouble.  At ninety-one years old, in poor health and alone in the world, he finds himself stranded on an isolated embankment after a car crash.   Suffering multiple injuries, he struggles to retain consciousness until a blurry image materializes and comes into focus beside him:  his beloved wife Ruth, who passed away nine years ago.  Urging him to hang on, she forces him to remain alert by recounting the stories of their lifetime together – how they met, the precious paintings they collected together, the dark days of WWII and its effect on them and their families.  Ira knows that Ruth can’t possibly be in the car with him, but he clings to her words and his memories, reliving the sorrows and everyday joys that defined their marriage.

A few miles away, at a local bull-riding event, a Wake Forest College senior’s life is about to change.  Recovering from a recent break-up, Sophia Danko meets a young cowboy named Luke, who bears little resemblance to the privileged frat boys she has encountered at school.  Through Luke, Sophia is introduced to a world in which the stakes of survival and success, ruin and reward — even life and death – loom large in everyday life.  As she and Luke fall in love, Sophia finds herself imagining a future far removed from her plans —  a future that Luke has the power to rewrite . . . if the secret he’s keeping doesn’t destroy it first.

Ira and Ruth.  Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common, and who are separated by years and experience. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

My Thoughts:

This is the latest book that came out September 17, 2013. The story follows the lives of two couples; one that demonstrates a love that lasts till old age and the other a young couple who have just discovered love.

Nicholas Sparks has the ability to make everyone believe that there is magic and that love is magical. There is a certain charm and intensity in the way he writes that touches a person to the depths of their soul. Romance is a concept handled in many ways by different people, but Nicholas Sparks will take you on a magical journey that you never want to end.

This story starts with an old man, Ira who is in an accident, his car has gone off the side of a cliff and he is stuck inside for a duration that is unthinkable. He was on his way to visit a place that was both dear to him and his late wife. He survives for 2 days in the crash with broken bones and everything only with thoughts of his late wife. He relives their memories together and imagines her to be there beside him encouraging him to stay alive as help would come.

In parallel we are introduced to a young couple who realise that they like each other after a series of events. Initially we are shown the two different couples and their story is described separately. Later on we see how fates intertwine and the young couple end up finding the old man Ira in the car wreck. A letter they find on him touches them to the depths of their soul as they realise a special kind of love. The climax and ending of this story will take any reader’s breath away at the sheer beauty of the situation.

As usual Nicholas Sparks delivers a heart-warming story that will make every reader laugh and cry and go through so many different emotions all at once.
