Saira knows her reputation has preceded her. She shouldn’t care, but Rihaan intrigues her no end. Already, she finds it hard to fight his appeal and maintain a cool distance from the reclusive yet arrestingly attractive scriptwriter. And then she discovers Rihaan has a secret. When the mystery about him unravels, will it tear them apart? At any cost, she cannot risk more heart break…

About the Author:

Ruchi Vasudeva is a doctor by profession, a teacher by vocation and an author by destiny. The writing bug long resided in her till the Passions contest held by Harlequin for Indian authors gave her a golden opportunity to have her dream realized. She debuted in August ’13 with her book ‘Bollywood Fiancé For A Day’. She writes romantic fiction with conflicted characters. She loves to write about spirited heroines getting hurtled out of their daily life as soon as they cross paths with their rather challenging heroes.

Juggling job, writing and family life isn’t something she would recommend to anyone who wants peace and calm but at the end of the day, she finds it very fulfilling. When not bent over the laptop, she might be found with her nose in books or munching nachos at the movies with her husband and two kids or glued to the telecast of Team India in action. Sometimes she drags herself for long walks and surprisingly discovers they are rather good for brewing story ideas. ‘Romance,’ she holds, ‘can feel over-hyped in this day and age but is all too tangible and needed in life on daily basis.’

Extract from the book:

What was it about that cool hauteur that made her want to play with fire?

‘Of course, you’re no danger to me in a…’ deliberately she let her gaze run over him. ‘…sexual way, are you?’ He didn’t miss it nor did he miss the insolence she projected. She could see his mouth tighten in controlled annoyance. For a wild minute she wished he’d let loose and the unreasoning thought made her heartbeat pick up.

‘Are you trying to challenge me?’ Her heart jumped up at the deep voice laced with mockery. Coward, she derided. Surely she wasn’t frightened of him?

‘No challenge for you surely? You can hardly stand the sight of me.’ She reminded him.

‘Am I supposed to jump on you in fervent denial of that statement, swearing that I can’t keep my hands off you?’ A dark eyebrow rose. ‘Sorry, but your little game won’t wash, Sehgal.’ Irritatingly he addressed her by her surname again.

‘Oh how astute you are, Khehra!’ She widened her eyes. ‘You catch on so fast, guess I’ll have to watch myself more around you.’ She formed a pout, aware of his gaze moving to it, feeling an unreasonable thrill as it did. She must be mad. Or starved of fun. But somehow she couldn’t not try to get a reaction out of that stone monument.

His eyes narrowed, ‘Whatever you’re trying, I’m not looking for trouble, and I’d advise you not to go poke for it either.’

‘So disappointing!’ She shook her head sorrowfully, ‘Here I was getting thrilled to bits we’re going to have this weekend. Just us. Lonesome, twosome.’

Read an Excerpt:

This is it. One wrong move and I find myself
crying to sleep. Days, maybe weeks of putting up the brave face. The ultimate,
cliché teenage drama. Everyone has been through it and everyone has heard of
it. But for me it was the first time. Maybe the last, hopefully.

So, wearing my heart on my sleeves, I fell in ‘love’.
Not once, but twice with the same guy in a row. Tramp? No. I was in love.
Deeply, madly, unconditionally. Until the hand
s
of practicality
punched me
right
on my face. I was left stranded
and confused. Wondering why all
of this was happening to
me.  Another cliché moment. But for me,
it was the first time.

There is something about human nature which seeks for sympathy. Just had
a breakup? The whole world is conspiring for you to be unhappy. No
, I will not smile, the world is a cruel place. It
takes days for people to get over it. For me? Well no surprise to you, it took
a year. One entire year of  ‘the wait’.
Sitting back now and thinking about it, I find it funny. No, I find it
hilarious. So, what happened after the year was over? Did I just miraculously
wake up one day and think to myself that, “hey, you know what…. you are a great
girl, get over it…move on!!” No, I realized that he had thought of this way
back. He had moved on way back. While, the “so-in-love”
me, was waiting. Simply waiting for my stars to turn
and
relive the same love story again.
  The moment
you see that your ex has a different face beside the “in a relationship”
status, that is the moment you realize how blind and ridiculous you were. The
once cute goatee seems like a bush now, that smile which made you smile makes
you want to knock off all his teeth, his fascination for food makes you notice
his peeking belly pouch. In a nutshell, you are no longer in love with him and
his flaws. So then, life brings you to a fork road. The fun road is where you
sit back and spread wild rumors about how terrible he is and how he broke your
heart. Believe me, the devil will tempt you to follow this path. It is a
fantastic journey, but a few more months of futility. So I chose the better
path. Get up, pull yourself together, shrug off the dust and embrace the new
journey. I am glad I chose the latter. Very glad.

What do you do when an entire part of your life has been erased which
once held so much of importance to you? You try and fill it up with things you
never had time for otherwise. Sociali
ze,
go out, write, sing, laugh, read, stare randomly out of the window and get lost
in your own beautiful world. Life was better. I am an ardent believer in
unconventionality. Why follow the crowd? I won’t make my own crowd! No siree! I
won’t even sit at a distance and laugh at the crowd. I would rather live in a
parallel world, a different dimension maybe. I can see you. But you can’t touch
me. You can’t judge me. I can be me. Shamelessly.
Raise the walls
high. Build the impenetrable walls. Shut the gates. It’s my own perfect world.
A year goes by in my world. Everything is healed.
I decide to open up the windows a little bit. A little fresh air will cause no
harm. I felt a whiff. A new breeze. That felt nice. It felt familiar. Maybe I
can open up my windows just a wee bit more. I will shut them off immediately.
They are wide open now. Even today. I never shut them. I was never able to.

Vulnerable or strong? Please be vulnerable, please be vulnerable………
pleaded my heart. Shut up already. You have created enough chaos. I am in
charge now. No more “
Fairytale dreams”,
no more car rides, no more falling for flattering messages, no more being silly
in love.
Do you have a tiny voice at the back of
your head which speaks back to you and gives life advice, for god’s sake? Well
mine is louder than my own voice, has a humongous ego
and can be downright obnoxious sometimes. It’s difficult living with it
seriously. You know the worst part? It is usually right.

‘ I love you’. Nope, no you don’t. I could die for you.
No you can’t. ‘I have waited my whole life for you’. Were you born yesterday?
‘I just want to be with you’. Yeah, you want to be in my pants. The voice is
annoying I tell you, but it is always right. If I was anything like the voice
then I doubt whether I would have had any friends.

Excerpt:

“Mike you and I both know that that isn’t going to happen so why don’t you just tell me what fur ball they’re going to saddle me with.” I said as I collected my stack of papers and organized them into a semi-neat pile.

Mike noisily cleared his voice, “Uh hey Ari…”

“God I hope that whoever it is that he isn’t a complete moron. If I’m going to be stuck with a pack partner, the least they can do is send me someone competent.” Mike noisily cleared his throat again.

“What?” I asked, looking up from my desk.

I was greeted by a tall man standing just inside the office, casually leaning against the doorframe. He had tousled brown hair and steely grey colored eyes. High cheekbones and a strong jaw formed his masculine face and a hint of stubble dusted his jaw line, not enough to appear unkempt but just enough to give a roguish impression. Dressed in black jeans, a black T, and a black leather jacket, he oozed tall, dark and handsome with deadly intent.

“That would be this fur ball right here.” He said, an arrogant grin lifting the corner of his mouth. I let my head fall to the surface of my desk, then for good measure I gently knocked my forehead on its smooth surface, one, two, three times. Dammit I couldn’t believe I had just called him a freaking fur ball! I could feel my cheeks warm in embarrassment and did my best to hide it.

“You all done with the show?” He asked as I lifted my head from the desk. I glared at him for good measure and then allowed my head to connect with the desk’s surface once more before sitting up. rubbing the slight sting away “Yea, I’m done.” I told him. Well, at least this wouldn’t be as bad as I had thought. James was the only shifter that I actually personally knew and was one of the few individuals I considered a friend. I met James about six months ago at a shifter bar downtown, though at the time I didn’t actually know that it was a shifter bar.

A group of coyotes had decided I was easy prey and were giving me a pretty hard time. James had intervened before things got out of hand which basically meant that he stopped me from wiping the floor with their coyote asses and burning the entire building to ash. It was probably a good thing that he had stepped in but I remember being furious with him at the time, I had really wanted to give those bastards a piece of my mind and show them that I wasn’t just some naive little girl. That was back when I was still cocky over my abilities. Things had changed since then and the thought was sobering. Now being a pyrokinetic was something I had to hide and honestly, that just plain sucked.

“So, you’re my partner?”

James nodded, his face going serious, “Yea I’m you’re partner, ready to do something reckless?”

I smiled at that, James knew me all to well.

“Absolutely.”

Grabbing my messenger bag I followed James out of the office, aware of Mike’s unapproving gaze on my every step.
