Book Review: House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J. Maas

This latest book by Sarah J. Maas has been the talk of the town everywhere! It is literally everywhere! It’s amazing.

Note: The review may have a few spoilers. Be careful when you read it.

Read on to know my thoughts on the book!

About the Book:

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1)

Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life. By day, she works for an antiquities dealer, selling barely legal magical artifacts, and by night, she parties with her friends, savoring every pleasure Lunathion-otherwise known as Crescent City-has to offer. But it all comes crumbling down when a ruthless murder shakes the very foundations of the city-and Bryce’s world.

Two years later, her job has become a dead end, and she now seeks only blissful oblivion in the city’s most notorious nightclubs. But when the murderer attacks again, Bryce finds herself dragged into the investigation and paired with an infamous Fallen angel whose own brutal past haunts his every step.

Hunt Athalar, personal assassin for the Archangels, wants nothing to do with Bryce Quinlan, despite being ordered to protect her. She stands for everything he once rebelled against and seems more interested in partying than solving the murder, no matter how close to home it might hit. But Hunt soon realizes there’s far more to Bryce than meets the eye-and that he’s going to have to find a way to work with her if they want to solve this case.

As Bryce and Hunt race to untangle the mystery, they have no way of knowing the threads they tug ripple through the underbelly of the city, across warring continents, and down to the darkest levels of Hel, where things that have been sleeping for millennia are beginning to stir…

With unforgettable characters and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom-and the power of love.

My Thoughts:

Review: 3.5 Stars

House of Earth and Blood is a well-written, fast paced story that has it’s ups and downs. The book started off slowly and abruptly, making it difficult for me to understand the context setting and the initial character introductions. However, as the story progresses, the plot becomes stronger and more interesting. The story becomes gripping and is a wild roller-coaster until the very end. The author ensures that the readers attention is on the book and nowhere else!

Most of the characters are well crafted and interesting. However, I was not very impressed with Bryce, the main protagonist of the story. She is not as relatable as I had hoped, but all in all, she holds her own well in the story. Being half-fae, she is under the protection of the Fae community, but that is where it ends. On her own with her best friends, living away from her loving mother and step-father, anyone will assume that she is enjoying her life. But when tragedy strikes, it all comes undone.

As Bryce is pulled in to investigate her best friends death, the possibility of suicide, then murder all lurk about. Bryce has to sort out the facts and separate the truth from the lies. Hunt Athalar, personal assassin for the Archangels, is forced to step in protect Bryce, while working with her to solve the case. What ensues is a battle of wits and an underlying attraction which the two characters fight. With a lot of secrets being kept, it is not easy to find out the truth.

I did come to love a lot of the supporting characters, Bryce’s best friend Fury, shrouded in mystery. Her step-brother, the Fae prince whom a lot of readers will come to love. His is a very well developed character. I also liked the other Archangels both good and bad. The author brings out a colorful variety in the nature of characters introduced.

One message which is persistent throughout the book is the meaning of friendship and loyalty. The author also shows us the true power of love above all else. The story, even though a little slow at first, was truly a wonderful read! I thoroughly enjoyed the action and appreciate the way the characters find their way in the end! Even Bryce and Hunt grow on you in the end and the reader just has to accept them since they bring the story together!

This book is definetely a must read, especially for fans of Fantasy Fiction and of Sarah J. Maas.

Book Review: On the Way to Simple by Jennifer Acres

About the Book:

On the Way to Simple

Dakota Ames had everything under control, or so she thought.
Ever since her father’s accident on duty as a fireman, she promised herself she would always have a plan. Life couldn’t throw her a curve anymore.
That is until her best friend Alex enlisted in the Navy.
This couldn’t happen. It wasn’t part of her plan. She hadn’t even worked up the nerve to tell him she loved him. Alex was wrong to go and she was going to prove it.
But when she meets Will, one of Alex’s fellow recruits, she finds that things aren’t always so simple.

My Thoughts:

A wonderful and heart warming story of friendship, love, acceptance and the beauty of life. This is a story that will tug at the heart strings of the reader. The ups and downs of life are beautifully portrayed in this story and it’s a pleasure to see the characters grow into stronger people.

Dakota, the main protagonist, has a plan for everything. She thinks that she can control the direction her life takes, including how everyone close to her affects it. What she doesn’t realize is that plans are never set in concrete and life is ever-changing. She is severely affected by the trauma of her father’s accident and the job he used to do, which lead her to be the way she was. Alex, the best friend, has also seen his share of problems in life and in spite of everything, has always been by Dakota’s side. It’s a deep friendship, stemming right from childhood.

The author brings out these minute details in the character’s lives and the introduction of Dakota’s best friend adds more substance to the story. She is so different from Dakota, but is perhaps one of the most caring and time proves that their friendship is very strong. The story revolves around how Dakota meets Will, a Navy recruit and falls for him against all her plans. In parallel, she is also dealing with the fact that Alex has enlisted and she feels betrayed by the same. What follows is a test of the strength of their friendship, their love and all that matters to the people involved.

Life takes unexpected turns, introduces new people to us, and in the end everyone has a role in shaping who you are. The author gives enough importance to all the relationships in this story and the feelings of the people involved. A well-written story with a moving plot, there is no doubt that the reader will fall in love with everything about this book.

Devices of War Trilogy

Genre: New Adult Fantasy Steampunk Adventure

Publisher: Blooding Books

Book Description: (Can be read as stand-alone)

Return to a world of mind blowing visuals, heart stopping action, and ships that sail the skies.

Nix, Queen of Wands, has exactly what she wants—Synn El’Asim, the greatest Mark the world has ever seen. Even though she bound his soul to hers, he is not easily controlled. If she wants him, she must do the one thing that pains her most. Let him go, and give him what he desires. Peace.

Armed with a treaty bearing Nix’s seal, Synn sets off to bridge the gap between the world’s two reigning tyrants—the Hands of Tarot and the Great Families. He struggles to trust Nix as he fights for control of his soul. He’s going to need every ounce of restraint when dealing with his mother, leader of the Great Families. She will not give up her power without a fight. Nix will honor her treaty only if Synn agrees to become her knight. His mother refuses to sign the peace agreement if he falls into the queen’s control.

Frustrated, Synn does the one thing neither woman saw coming. He invites all the tribes, currently voiceless in the war between these two ruling tyrants, to partake in the treaty negotiations. All they have to do is prove their worth in his Peace Games. As Synn’s influence and subsequent power grows, a new fight begins.

Who will control Synn’s League of Cities? Can he protect more people as a leader of the Great Families, or as the Knight of Wands?

Praise for Fall of Sky City

Wow! What did I just read?? The story was deliciously complex, full of fear, wonder, magic, gadgets, gizmos, one heck of a psycho Queen and wonderful friends. Every character brought something to the story, each with a unique personality that came to life through the book, each with their own fears to overcome. Victoria Limbert

I love the world Blooding has created. She managed to create it in a way that it combines specs of all my favorite movies, books, etc. It’s a mixture of young adult fantasy, steam punk, dystopia, sci-fi, paranormal and even some tiny bit of romance. Fall of Sky City is a diverse book that is intense, a little bit violent, and a whole lot of awesome! I look forward to reading the next book of the series! Unputdownable Books

SM Blooding is a new author to me, but this is definitely not the last book I’ll read by her. Synn El’Asim is a powerful character–the reader sees him grow from a young man who has not yet come into his power to a strong man who is courageous enough to fight for what he believes in–his family and his people. The world building Ms. Blooding does is nothing short of remarkable. A world composed of flying ships, ice worlds, danger, and intrigue. My World of Dreams

This book is action-packed and intense. You feel like you’re part of the drama. This story is intense. The action is perfectly paced. I had trouble putting the book down. I really felt for Synn from the very beginning. He goes through so much. As soon as he gets his mark, he is plunged into one situation after another. Queen Nix, who is horrifying by the way, pushes Synn to new levels, in more and more diabolical ways. With the help of friends and family, Synn becomes a strong leader. Waiting on Sunday to Drown

I’m amazed of the world Blooding has created and built. It has Sky, Land, and Water Cities. These cities each has its own technologies, language, and a whole different way of life. These worlds remind me a lot of Avatar the Last Airbender and Star Wars, which I both loved wholeheartedly.Bahrain Newspaper Article Review!

MY THOUGHTS:
This story deals with the trauma and emotional roller-coaster that a teenager faces at the disappearance of his mother. She was home until the evening when she decided to pop out to buy some milk. Adam being a typical teenager did not pay much attention to his mom going out until a couple of hours later when his father returns and she is still not back. Then begins the frantic worry and paranoia. His father at first distraught seems to handle to situation better than he is. The discord in his relationship with his father is shown beautifully with the main events leading to it highlighted for the reader’s notice.
Adam then meets Skye, who draws him out slowly and seems to understand his pain. She has also “misplaced” a parent, her father left when she was small and now Adam sets out to help her find him. He believes that by doing this he can at least make one person happy. There is a lot more to this than just a simple story and the author tells the story really well. She manages to keep the reader hooked on till the end while dealing with all the emotions with delicacy.
Lee Murray has handled the story well and brought in some wonderful twists in the story. This story is worth a read and it will get the reader thinking seriously in various directions.

JulianaAUTHOR BIO
While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting—but equally gratifying—life of a wife, mother, and author. Thousands of miles away from her former home in Brazil, she now resides in Connecticut and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy.

My Thoughts:
This book is brilliant and a page turner. I could not stop reading even for a second. The story follows Bia as she goes to university away from home and tries to experience college the American way. Being Brazilian gets her a lot of attention which she does not want and it’s up to her to figure out who is really her friend. Through all this she finds herself at a farm where she dives into horse riding, her first love. This calms her and brings her face to face with Garrett for whom she develops feelings. This story is about Bia finding herself, discovering what she wants to do and realising that not everything can be obtained by living away from family. She also learns that to love is also to let go. If the love is true it will remain and so will the person.
A beautifully written book, there is a lot to be got from this and the author has subtly put out there some life lessons that we should pay heed to. Without giving us a feeling of being preached to, we are shown how having faith and trust can take a relationship to a greater level. This book is definitely worth the read and with romance splashed in, it is a treat for most book lovers.

In 2418, rampant violence and corporate warfare have left no shortage of angry wraiths in West City. Most exist as little more than fleeting shadows and eerie whispers in the darkness.

Kirsten is shunned by a society that does not understand psionics, feared by those who know what she can do, and alone in a city of millions. Every so often, when a wraith gathers enough strength to become a threat to the living, these same people rely on her to stop it.

Unexplained killings by human-like androids known as dolls leave the Division One police baffled, causing them to punt the case to Division Zero. Kirsten, along with her partner Dorian, wind up in the crosshairs of corporate assassins as they attempt to find out who – or what – is behind the random murders before more people die.

She tries to hold on to the belief that no one is beyond redemption as she pursues a killer desperate to claim at least one more innocent soul – that might just be hers.

My Thoughts:

Wow!!! That is the first thought that went through my mind. I love this book. The story is wonderful and so well-written it is easy to fall in love with. The story follows Kirsten as she tries to solve a case where dolls seem to be going crazy and randomly killing people. Kirsten is a psionic and has the ability to see ghosts and interact with them. She can also converse telepathically and read people’s minds. We are also given a glimpse into Kirsten’s childhood and the reasons behind who she is today.

Kirsten’s abilities have her shunned by people in general as they react to her with fear. There are very few people who like her and stay with her and thus leads to her feeling of loneliness. We are also given a glimpse into a world where technology has evolved to such an extent that society is completely dependent on it for everything. This is just one example of how the world could be so many years down the line. This paranormal fiction will have you believe in the existence of ghosts and Kirsten’s struggle to accept religion, the existence of god and the difference between good and evil in a person will get you thinking.

There is some amount of philosophy that the author has subtly discussed through the book without coming across as preachy. The author has beautifully crafted this story with the right amount of suspense and twists that will have the reader surprised. A gripping plot and a wonderful writing style lend more credit to the author’s work and make this story worth the read.
